Air quality
On September 30, 2006, Pacific Steel Casting (PSC) finished installing state-of-the-art technology in Plant 3. This new technology filters the air inside the plant before it hits the atmosphere. Carbon adsorption systems have been used by many industries and facilities all over the world. They have been particularly effective reducing odor and other emissions on PSC’s plants 1 and 2. The US Environmental Protection Agency and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) have determined that carbon systems are the best available control technology for organic compound emissions.
PSC’s new carbon system – which went into effect on October 15 – is specially designed and engineered for operation at Plant 3. Working in combination with improved internal airflow, the carbon unit collects emissions more efficiently into overhead vents benefiting workers and neighbors alike. Neighbors should notice a significant improvement in the elimination of odor from Pacific Steel Casting. Pacific Steel installed carbon adsorption abatement systems in Plant 2 in 1985 and Plant 1 in 1991.
The carbon systems at Pacific Steel have been proven to reduce odors and other emissions. It is the best technology available, having the support of environmental regulators including, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Pacific Steel plans to work with BAAQMD to monitor the unit closely for emissions and believes that this unit will reduce emissions.
