The City of Berkeley is
threatening to close down
Pacific Steel Casting
That means 670 GMP members would lose their jobs
and those jobs would be lost forever to companies overseas.
Pacific Steel Casting has been in the same location for 75 years while the City
has allowed a residential neighborhood to develop around it. Now, after the
company has spent millions installing emissions control equipment and odor
complaints have fallen dramatically, the City has decided the company is a
nuisance and wants to hold hearings to revoke its use permit.
Please help us prevent this from happening.
Pacific Steel Casting is a unique place in American industry. The company is one
of the last places in America where a new hire can arrive with little or no
English or formal education. At PSC workers receive English instruction and job
training along with excellent wages and benefits. Over the years PSC has
employed many generations of the same families who work hard, earn excellent
wages, support their families and send their children to college. It’s no wonder
this foundry has the highest worker retention rate in the industry.
What can you do?
Please write an email or letter
to the members of the Berkeley City Council today (see addresses below) to tell
them what you think of their plans to throw 670 families out of work, especially
as the country is entering a recession.
Come to the Berkeley City Council meeting
Tuesday, February 12 at 6:30 p.m. to share your outrage at Councilmember Linda
Maio’s request that the city start the use permit revocation process.
